What is Ankle Arthroscopy?
Ankle arthroscopy is a surgery used to fix problems inside the joint of your ankle. Your surgeon will put an arthroscope, which is a special tool, into your ankle to look for damage and fix it.
The arthroscope has a camera and a light that lets your doctor see what’s going on inside your ankle while only making a few small cuts in your skin. Your doctor will also make small cuts to put in any other tools they need to use during the surgery.

WHAT IS ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY USED FOR?
Ankle arthroscopy is a good choice for anyone who has pain in their ankle joint or other problems with their ankle joint, like ankle arthritis.
It can also help people who have trouble walking because of a problem in their ankle joints. Most of the time, your doctor will suggest arthroscopy if steroid injections, RICE therapy, or physical therapy, haven’t helped the problem.
ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY RECOVERY
Most people get better in a few months after having an ankle arthroscopy. How long it takes you to fully heal depends on why you had surgery and how quickly you get your balance, strength, and range of motion back.
After surgery, you might need to use crutches or wear a splint on your ankle for a few weeks. After that, you should be able to walk in a boot.
After ankle arthroscopy, you will also have to go to physical therapy. This could be as easy as doing your own stretches and exercises at home. Depending on how complicated your surgery is, you might need to work with a physical therapist to get your ankle back to its normal level of strength and mobility.
ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY FAQS
HOW COMMON IS ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY?
Ankle arthroscopy is very common, and new technology has made it possible for surgeons to treat more conditions than ever before.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ANKLE ARTHROPSCOPY?
One of the least invasive surgeries you can have is an ankle arthroscopy. It lets surgeons find and fix a lot of problems without having to do much to your body. Even if your underlying condition is more complicated, your surgeon will only need to make a few small cuts to fix it. This means that you should have:
- A short amount of time to get better, often just a few weeks
- After arthroscopy, there is less pain than after open surgery
- Little blood loss and little scarring
- Compared to more invasive types of surgery, there is a much lower chance of surgical complications
WHEN CAN I GO BACK TO WORK AFTER ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY?
After a few weeks, you should be able to go back to work, as long as you can do your job while sitting down. Ask your doctor or surgeon how long you should wait to do anything that could hurt your ankle again. However, it’s still important to keep things moving.
