Dislocated Knee Treatment

A dislocated knee is caused when the structures in the knee are out of place. Sometimes, people are born with knee dislocation, but more often, it happens as a result of trauma such as a car accident or sports injury.

A dislocated knee is different from a dislocated kneecap, also known as patellar subluxation. A true dislocated knee is rare but very serious. If you think you have dislocated your knee, call us right away for an appointment.

TREATMENTS FOR A DISLOCATED KNEE

If you have dislocated your knee, there are two treatment options. If the damage to your knee isn’t severe, our orthopedic specialists may be able to put your knee back into place manually without surgery. Your physician will move your leg into different positions until the structures in the knee pop back into place. You’ll then need to wear a brace for a certain time afterward to keep your knee immobile while it heals.

If you have more severe injuries from your knee dislocation, such as broken bones, torn ligaments, or damaged nerves or blood supply, surgery may be needed to treat your dislocated knee.

Dislocated knee surgery may be done arthroscopically, with tiny incisions and miniature instruments, or with traditional “open” surgery, depending on the level of damage to your knee.
