Dislocated Shoulder
When your upper arm bone (humerus) pops out of the socket of your shoulder joint, this is referred to as a dislocated shoulder. The shoulder joint is the most frequently dislocated joint in the human body. Fortunately, a dislocated shoulder is treatable, typically at an in-office visit.
DISLOCATED SHOULDER SYMPTOMS
It takes quite a bit of force to dislocate a shoulder. If you’ve experienced a fall, car accident, or sports injury that dislocates your shoulder, you’ll likely notice that your shoulder is out of joint right away. Symptoms of a dislocated shoulder include:
- Intense pain that sets in immediately
- Visible deformity of the shoulder joint
- Inability to move your arm or shoulder
- Numbness, weakness, and tingling in your neck or arm
HOW TO FIX A DISLOCATED SHOULDER
If you believe that you may have dislocated your shoulder, it’s important to see your doctor right away. Not only is a dislocated shoulder intently painful, but it can also cause damage to the tendons and tissues in your shoulder, as well.
TREATMENTS FOR A DISLOCATED SHOULDER INCLUDE
Closed reduction – Your doctor will use manual techniques to manipulate your shoulder bones back into their proper position. You may receive a muscle relaxer or sedative before this in-office procedure. Once the bones are maneuvered back into position, the intense pain of a dislocated shoulder should disappear almost instantly.
Shoulder dislocation surgery – If weak or damaged tendons are the cause of recurring shoulder dislocation, surgery may be required to repair them so that they keep your shoulder in place properly.
