What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone or both. This can result in a decrease in bone strength that ultimately increases the risk of breaking a bone (fracture). A fracture can lead to pain, loss of mobility, a change in lifestyle, loss of independence, and the potential for more fractures in the future.
- About 7 million women and 1.5 million men have osteoporosis
- Women lose up to 20% of their bone density in the first 5-7 years after menopause
- People with osteoporosis cannot feel their bones getting weaker and most often don’t know they have it until they break a bone
- When your bones are weakened from osteoporosis they can break more easily. Simple actions such as sneezing, hugging, or bumping into furniture can cause your bones to break
- Osteoporosis most often results in a broken hip, spine or wrist

What you can do
Know your “T Score” by getting your DEXA Scan (also called a Bone Density Test) every two years!
Who should have a bone density test?
- Women ages 65 years and older
- Men ages 70 years and older
- Anyone who has broken a bone after the age of 50
- Women ages 50-64 years with risk factors*
- Men ages 50-69 years with risk factors*
*Risk factors for Osteoporosis include: family history of osteoporosis and/or fracture, frequent falling, vitamin D deficiency, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, malabsorption, and some medications, such as prednisone or seizure medication.
When to consider treatment for Osteoporosis
The results of your bone density test, combined with all available clinical information, including your personal preference and previous experience with medications, can help with deciding to start, continue, or change medication to make your bones stronger and reduce the risk of breaking bones.
